CURRICULUM VITAE
Hubert Österle was born on June 24, 1949 in Dornbirn (Austria). He studied Business Administration at the University of Innsbruck and the Johannes Kepler University of Linz. He obtained his PhD at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in 1973. After working as a consultant at IBM Germany, Österle completed his postdoctoral work (Habilitation) on the „Design of information systems“ at the Technical University of Dortmund in 1980 and became full professor of business and information systems engineering at the University of St. Gallen in the same year.
In 1989, Österle founded the Institute of Information Management and created the research program „Business Engineering HSG“ as a collaboration between academia and industry. Starting with seven Swiss companies in 1989 the research program is funded now by more than 50 leading Swiss, German, Swedish and British large enterprises and to a minor part by public organizations. It runs so-called competence centers, that means consortial research groups, in the areas of information systems and technology management, business engineering, business models, business networking, data quality, internet of things, crowd sourcing, social networking, and independent living, esp. for senior citizens. In 2012 he established a research collaboration in the field of independent living with the Wroclaw University of Economics and the University of Leipzig.
The results of this research are published in more than 30 books and almost 400 papers in scientific and industry journals. Österle is editor-in-chief of Electronic Markets and a member of the editorial boards of other journals. The research activities were honored by a scientific impact award as well as a rigor and relevance award in 2012 and 2014 respectively. The research program was the foundation for 100 doctoral theses (Dissertationen) and ten post-doctoral theses (Habilitationen). Eight of these researchers are meanwhile full professors at renowned universities. Hubert Österle initiated teaching programs at the University of St. Gallen, esp. the Executive Master in Business Engineering.
Besides his academic achievements, Österle founded in 1989 the consultancy company „The Information Management Group“ in Switzerland with Subsidiaries in Austria, Germany, Poland, USA, Japan, and China. In 2004 he founded the Business Engineering Institute for transfer of scientific results into practice. He is member of industry boards e.g. of the German initiative for Smart Services or a jury for the yearly election of the most successful CIO.
